James L. Silvester
James L. SilvesterGoals Are Gold
By James L. Silvester

Not only do you need to have identifiable goals and objectives, but a plan of action is a definite must. Very few individuals have become successful entrepreneur without knowing where they are going and how they are going to get there. If you are still working for somebody else, set a timetable for breaking away and taking the plunge. However, if you are currently an entrepreneur but lack goals and specific plans, now is the time to sit down and do some thinking.

Listed below are some common goals that you may consider. Please be advised that this is not a complete list by a stretch of the imagination. They are offered as a guide only. Great care should be taken when delineating one's own goals. Every individual situation is different and that in itself necessitates careful consideration and unique planning.

-I want to be self-employed within the next eighteen months.
-I would like to provide for all of my family's needs within two years.
-I want to be financially independent within ten years of starting my own business.
-I would like to employ my wife and/or children.
-I would like to pass on a viable business to my heirs.

Your goals should be so constructed that there stands a reasonable chance of attainment. Goals that are unrealistic will only lead to frustration and non-fulfillment. In addition, keep them simple and to the point. Make sure they can be reviewed and evaluated as time progresses.

Once your goals have been visualized, the next step is to formulate various "plans of action" that will provide you a roadmap into the realm of entrepreneurship. "Action plans", as we will call them, are multi-purpose guides that will point you in the right.
